Coyotes reach one-year ECHL affiliation
agreement with Phoenix Roadrunners
Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Michael Barnett announced today that the Coyotes have reached a one-year ECHL affiliation agreement with the Phoenix RoadRunners for the 2006-07 season.
“We look forward to working with the RoadRunners and see benefits to both organizations from this new relationship,” said Barnett.
The Phoenix RoadRunners are one of 26 teams in the ECHL. The RoadRunners play in the West Division of the National Conference along with Alaska, Idaho, Las Vegas, Utah and Victoria. The RoadRunners’ president is former Coyotes’ player Claude Lemieux and the team’s COO and general manager is Ray Delia. The club is coached by Ron Filion.
The RoadRunners joined the ECHL on February 1, 2005 and played their first game on October 21, 2005 at Utah. Last season, the team finished with a 20-47-5 record. The RoadRunners home arena is the US Airways Center. |

Lacrosse Sport
Team sport played by two teams of ten players each who use netted sticks in order to pass and catch a rubber ball (about the size of tennis ball, but heavier) with the ultimate aim of scoring goals by propelling the ball into the opponents' net. In its modern incarnation, lacrosse is played by three attackmen, three midfielders, three defensemen, and one goaltender on a grass or artificial turf field.
Men wear helmets and other protective equipment as body checking is an integral part of the game. Women wear protective eye gear, but less overall equipment because hitting is not permitted in the women's game. The sport has Native American origins. Its native name was dehuntshigwa'es in Onondaga ("men hit a rounded object") da-nah-wah'uwsdi in Eastern Cherokee ("little war"), Tewaarathon in Mohawk language ("little brother of war"), and baggataway First Nations language "The Creator's game". It was usually played over the range of 3-10 miles.
Since there was only one ball, players would concentrate on injuring their opponent with the sticks. Sometimes the game would last for days. Today, Lacrosse is popular mainly in North America and at the collegiate and high school levels.
